The switch is a very basic electromechanical component which is used to open and close a electric circuit or multiple circuits depending on the switch design. There are many different kinds of switches available, one common type of switch being a Single Pole Single Throw or SPST for short. Take a look at some of the pictures, these are four common types of switch.
